Christian Internship – Campers, My Favorite Part of Camp

By CBM National intern,  Joseph Kirkland –

Some kids are clean, some are messy; some are the most well behaved children you’ve ever seen, and then there are those that are not. They come in all sorts of sizes, backgrounds, ideologies and experiences. They are people and want to feel that way. And every once in a while they come to camp. They come for various reasons–their parents or relatives made them come, they memorized Bible verses and attended classes to earn their way to camp, or they are just coming for the first time and have no idea what is in store for the week.

The best part of camp, in my opinion, are the campers. Sure, the pitchers of tea or lemonade don’t talk back when you try to get them where they need to go. But campers are a totally different matter. Pitchers can be mass-produced and used the same way, no matter which pitcher it is.  Campers, on the other hand, are all different in one way or another. Being able to see this uniqueness at camp is something that I enjoy a lot.

Campers also can be loads of fun as well. One summer I had a camper preach through the first few stories of the Old Testament with another camper helping him act it all out. Game time has its own fun moments, too. Beyond being fun and interesting, campers are also still learning, and it’s great to be able to watch these kids learn new things and ask difficult questions (like about the pre-existence of God) because it shows growth and a desire to keep growing.

These reasons are why campers are my favorite part about camp. But campers also grow up and might end up where you are now. They are our future high school camp staff, full-time CBM staff and missionaries. The possibilities of what God has planned are endless. But you don’t have to be a former camper to be able to work at a camp.  There is this great thing called the CBM National Internship Program which, if you are interested in ministry of any sort, it would be a great year of training to go through and experience. If you want more information, go to the website https://childrensbibleministries.net/missionary or contact a CBM National Staff Member and talk to them. But I figure that’s enough for you all for now.
