In the busy life of a summer camp, the “work day” never really ends. I’ve heard camp referred to as a “fish bowl” and I continue to wholeheartedly agree with that statement each day. Every action or emotion displayed is noticed by someone, somewhere. Rarely, if ever, does something actually go unnoticed at camp. There’s no time for pretending at camp because you’ll soon be exposed for who you really are. No one can wear a mask 24/7, so camping ministry does a good job of revealing who people really are beneath the surface.

We Must Be Awfully Small and Not as Strong as We Think We Are

This line from a song by Rich Mullins came to my mind while working as a counselor at camp. I had noticed some things that the other counselors had been doing that I thought they ought to be doing differently. With all my expertise and wisdom on the matter, I pointed it out to the counselors. After I did, one of them, a junior counselor a good 7 years younger than me, politely asked, “How many times have you been a summer counselor before?” I paused for a moment before replying, “Once.”

While here at Camp Gilead, God has taught me so much. He is definitely working at this camp. One thing that He has reminded me of is His great faithfulness. Through scripture and the lives of others He has revealed this truth continually. Even in the hardest circumstances, He is still faithful. I’m so thankful for this because I can look ahead into the unknown of my future and know, no matter what awaits me, I am sure that He will always be faithful. What a blessing.
