I Stand Amazed

By Emileah Hawkins, CBM National Intern –

I was raised in church. I knew a lot of Bible stories and I could answer the questions they asked in Sunday school. I said a prayer to ask God to save me when I was eight years old. But I did it because I thought that was what was expected of me. I saw all the other kids my age at church doing that, so I did too. I knew about God, but I did not know God. I knew the Bible said that God loves me, but I never really felt His love. I knew the Bible said God has the best plan for me, but I kept living my life doing what I wanted. I told myself I was doing what God wanted me to do, but I never actually prayed and asked Him.

When I was eighteen, I gave my life to Christ. I saw my sin and my mistakes. I saw my stubbornness and doubt. Before, I was lost, broken, and alone. Then, after giving Him my life, I had joy and peace. I felt God’s love. I finally felt whole. I started to live my life with God as my focus. I have struggled many times along the way. Every time I would fail, I would be reminded of who God is. I am still amazed by all the things I learn about God.

The devotional book I have been reading through has focused on the first eleven chapters of Genesis. I love these chapters because it is where God is first revealed to us. Genesis is not only meant to give us historical facts, but it is also meant to help us grow more like God, by revealing his attributes. In this book of the Bible, we see what God has done and how He interacted with His people during the first part of history. Genesis tells us how the world was created. But, more than that, it tells us that it was created and by Whom.

Genesis chapters 1-3 tells the story of creation. I love this story, but one of my favorite verses is found in chapter 3, verse 21, (NASB) “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.” God is loving. He didn’t kill Adam and Eve in anger and just start over. Instead, He clothed them. They knew they were naked and that was a problem. They covered themselves with leaves but that wasn’t good enough. It wouldn’t last. God knew this and He provided for them. He had to punish them because He keeps His promises. But He loved them enough to provide for them.

I am amazed by this. It says a lot about His character. If it were a human in that position, they would have let anger control them. But God is more than we could ever imagine being. As Christians, our goal is to be more like Him. We will never be able to totally achieve that because we are still sinful beings. But we should model ourselves after the character of God. I’m amazed by His character. There are so many things that describe Him, but my favorite is love. God is love.
