Be a Missionary Wherever You Are

By Emileah Hawkins, CBM National Intern –

When people think of a missionary they usually picture someone in a foreign country, like Africa, helping the sick and poor. That is true; some missionaries do that. These people believe they have been called to make it their full-time job to tell others about God. They live all over the globe and put their lives on the line for what they believe.

I think of the story of two young men in the 1700’s. They had heard about an island with a large population of slaves. They were determined to share the Gospel with them. They decided to sell themselves into slavery in order to reach these people. They sold their belongings and said goodbye to their families, never planning on returning home. As the ship started off, one of the young men raised his hand and said “May the lamb who was slain receive the reward of his suffering.” That powerful statement was a rally cry of sorts for the missionary movement of the time. People were understanding the meaning behind it and wanting to do something.

God’s effort to reach and know us changed the reality of the universe for all eternity.

We had no way of reaching God because sin entered the world in Genesis. So God sent His Son to suffer and die for us so that we may know Him. It amazes me every time I think about it, and it had an effect on these two young men. They gave up their lives to serve God.

The story continues when they arrived on the island. The slave owner did not allow them to sell themselves into slavery. The big plan backfired. However, they didn’t give up. Instead, they got ordinary jobs and lived on the island. They shared the gospel every chance they got, especially with the slaves, as they came into contact with them. I love this story because it is what a Christian is supposed to do. We read the command in Matthew 28 to go and make disciples of all nations.

But not everyone is called to travel the world. You could be the only example of Christ in your office or school. Or the only Christian that a friend knows. Or an example for your children. Your role may seem unimportant in the grand scheme of things but you are making an impact, if you are living a life that honors God. Not all missionaries that raise support are overseas. A lot are here in the United States, local. They work at churches, community outreach organizations or camps. They are in your area. There is a children’s song that says:

“Be a missionary every day.

Tell the world that Jesus is the way.

Be it in the town or country or the busy avenue.

Africa or Asia, the task is up to you.”

Every Christian has been called to share the Gospel with the people around them, wherever that may be.
